FYI: MIDDLE SCHOOL OPEN HOUSES I’VE HEARD ABOUT

MS 447 Math & Science Exploratory School sometimes referred to as Upper Carroll is having an open house on Saturday October 6 at 10 am. You can just show up.

This will be a good way to hear about the school. Not a good way to see the school in action. But you will, most likely, get to meet administration and teachers and hear the talk.

This is a very hot school in Boerum Hill and this open house should attract quite a crowd of nervous parents.

Every Wednesday at 9:30 am I hear that the Urban Assembly for Arts and Letters in Ft. Green is having an open house for parents. A few friends have gone and they’ve been exceedingly impressed.

  1. MS 447 Math & Science Exploratory School is sometimes called “Upper Carroll” because that used to be it’s name. It was originally called that because it was on the upper floor of “The Carroll School” (aka PS 58 in Carroll Gardens.) When that space became too small for them, they moved and changed names at the same time. I really wish people would call it by its current name.
And, yes, you can just show up to the open house. We did this last year when we were looking at middle schools. But it was jam packed!!! You won’t get to meet any teachers, we were toured around by a parent, and other groups were toured around by parents that day as well. The principal did her spiel and you could wait to speak to her if you are interested, but she had a real mob around her and it didn’t really pay to do that. A better idea is to reserve a spot on one of their scheduled school tours, which are during the school day. You get to see the place in actions, teachers included, and the groups tend to be a lot smaller. I must say, I came away with a much better impression after the school day tour. We liked Math and Science a lot!
As for the Urban Assembly Academy of Arts and Letters, you should call them right away if you want a tour. They booked up pretty fast last year. We liked that school, but our daughter didn’t.
