The OTBKB Weekend List: Feb 26-27

The weekend is HERE. I’ve been slaving over a hot stenography machine all week and I’m ready for something fun. Don’t forget the Oscars*2011 are on Sunday night. The biggest and best book sale is at the Park Slope United Methodist Church and there’s a Johnny Cash 79th birthday party at The Bell House. Good stuff at Zora Space for KIDS! Interested?

Amazing Book Sale

Saturday and Sunday at Park Slope United Methodist Church: Biggest, best book sale! The 18th year in a row of books, books, and more books. Very inexpensive, fun. Go!

Movies

This weekend at the Pavilion: Black Swan, The King’s Speech, Gnomeo and Juliet, Just Go With It, Unknown (with Liam Neeson), Justin Beiber in 3-D

This weekend at BAM: Cedar Rapids, The Fighter, The King’s Speech, True Grit

Korean cinema at BAM: BAMcinématek continues its tradition of importing the works of masters of new Korean cinema with this look at the work of Kim Jee-woon. Kim’s newest film, I Saw the Devil (2010), was banned from public theaters in Korea due to scenes that the government claimed “severely damage the dignity of human values” before being trimmed by seven minutes to gain release. As American audiences brace for the imminent release of this newest bloody opus, BAMcinématek is thrilled to look back at more than a decade of shock, gore, and style from Kim Jee-woon.

This weekend at Cobble Hill Cinema: Biutiful, Blue Valentine, The King’s Speech, True Grit, Cedar Rapids

Music This Weekend

Check out Now I’ve Heard Everything for some great music this weekend. He’s the man and he knows.

Saturday at Zora Space at 4PM for Kids: Bring your little ones to these free, interactive, 45-minute concerts, especially designed for children ages three to six, but fun for the whole family! Concerts feature songs, movement, and instrument demonstrations and create opportunities for musical creativity and play. The Itty Biddies’ The Itty Biddies genre-defying sound has earned the group an avid following. Their interactive, energetic show takes children on a musical journey around the US and beyond through song and storytelling. The audience will dance at a hoedown, soar over imaginary rivers, and play instruments they didn’t know they had.

Saturday at The Bell House at 8PM: The Johnny Cash 79th Birthday Bash. The website says that it’s sold out…

Saturday at Zora Space at 8PM: The Diana Wayburn Ensemble will be playing pieces from her recently released CD “forces of nature” as well as newly composed pieces.

Saturday at Jewish Music Cafe at 8:30PM: Pey Dalid and Oneg Shemesh

Poetry

Sunday at Zora Space at 3PM: Reading by  Rachel Eliza Griffiths, a celebration of her new collection of poetry, the second work in a trio of new releases from Griffiths, closely following her debut collection, Miracle Arrhythmia (Willow Books, 2010). With The Requited Distance (The Sheep Meadow Press), the rhythm embedded within Griffithsʼ art, her remarkable ability to reveal the mythology imbued in our everyday lives.
