DIY Utopias: Growing Against All Odds at the Old Stone House

As part of its Brooklyn Utopias: Farm City exhibition, the Old Stone House of Park Slope presents “DIY Utopias: Growing Against All Odds,” on Monday, November 1st from 7-9PM, an evening of hands-on skillshare with the exhibition’s activist-artists in an intimate gallery setting.

The array of urban farming strategies will be MC’d by artist Mary Mattingly, who had to explore and enact each one of these approaches for her project, The Waterpod (2009), a floating farm and artists’ live-work vessel. Click on read more for a list of the workshops and the details…

WORKSHOPS

(1) Rooftop Micro-Farming : : Frieda Lim, Slippery Slope Farms
Slippery Slope Farm is a modern urban sub-irrigated rooftop micro-farm located in Gowanus, Brooklyn.  Lim designed the project to be simple to install, easy to maintain and capable of replication by anyone with a little space and a desire to grow their own food. Frieda is an interdisciplinary designer of gardens and greenscaping products, events, food, interiors, home furnishings, clothing, miscellaneous.

(2) Rainwater Harvesting : : Andrew Casner, GrowNYC
Andrew works on the crew that installs rainwater catchment systems for community gardens.  He knows how to get rooftop water to give to your plants so that potable water does not have to be used.

(3) Permaculture & Composting : : Claudia Joseph
Claudia is a Master Teacher about the terms and conditions of permaculture practice.  If you have ever wondered what “permaculture” is about and how you can get involved, Claudia is the right person to see. Learn from Claudia how to make your “waste” into black gold at home and in the garden.

(4) School Farm Planning & Planters : : Aki and Ron Baker : Adopt-A-Farmbox
Adopt-A-Farmbox will donate “farmboxes” to several schools in the New York City area this Fall, including several schools throughout Brooklyn. Adopt-A-Farmbox is a volunteer-based, grass-roots campaign started in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn and has become an exemplar project integrating community development with education, food, creativity and agriculture.

(5) Social Media Strategies for Urban Farmers : : Hugh McMillan – Goddamn Cobras Collective
The GC Collective has helped support the media frenzy around Eagle Street Rooftop Farms that has brought the project exposure, support and interest.
