Park Slope Restaurant Alive and Kicking

I’ve been rooting for Bussaco, a lovely wine bar and restaurant on Park Slope’s Union Street, all along and it seems that things are working out. They’ve got a special going right now: Blue Point oysters and a glass of good wine for $16.

Anyone want to meet me over there?

You gotta have compassion for a restaurant that opens in the autumn of 2008. I mean, whoa, the restaurant biz isn’t for the faint hearted even in the best of times.

That said, its pretty decor, good New American cuisine and fantastic wine list have kept it going through some rough economic months.

I ran into owner Scott Carney recently and we talked about what’s been going on over there.

Last month, Smartcar of America used the space as a showroom and conference space for their North American employees.

They only used the space by day, ate lunch there and Carney was able to resume restaurant service in the evenings.

That’s resourceful. And it all came about because a couple with child dined at the restaurant one night, noticed the downstairs event room and one of the three worked for an advertising agency…

And that’s how stuff happens…

“We were in good company,” Carney  told me. “They did their suburban event at Blue Hill Farm, an acclaimed restaurant in Westchester.”

Carney also reminded me about June’s benefit brunch for experimental music and film space Issue Project Room with John Hockenberry, radio host of The Takeaway, interviewing Park Slope fave, Steve Buscemi.

He said it was funny when they showed the scene from Resevoir Dogs, where Buscemi in his role as Mr. Pink refuses to leave a tip.

“It was a funny scene to see in a restaurant,” Carney said.

I asked Carney, a  former partner at Gotham Bar and Grill and the Tonic in Chelsea, if he planned to go on a vacation.

“I’ve worked night and day for the last two years at the restaurant…”

I’d say he deserves a vacation.
