Con Edison Scam in the Slope?

Someone on Park Slope parents wanted to spread the word about this scam.

A while ago several people wrote about a guy who
buzzed people’s doors claiming to be a supplier for
Con Edison.  I think he then tried to get money if
people opened the door.

Well, today he buzzed my downstairs buzzer and said the same thing.
When I said all the meters were downstairs, he insisted that
he needed to come in and see me.  I said no and did
not go downstairs to talk to him.

Please be aware that this is going on in the slope
again.

  1. This just happened at my building in Greenpoint! A man went to our neighbor’s apartment to ask for a copy of his Con Ed bill and when he started copying down information, our neighbor got suspicious and asked him to come back. He then came to our apartment and asked my boyfriend for a copy of our bill! Luckily, the neighbor read about this scam online and came downstairs to chase the man away. It’s a good thing I shred all my bills and access them online if need be. Yikes! Does anyone know what they’re doing with the information off our bill?

  2. Two black women, claiming to be employees of con-ed, rang the doorbell today and asked to see my bill so she could read to me important information on my own bill about a price change. I questioned one of the women as to why they had to come all the way to my home to read my own bill to me, which seemed like the most illogical thing in the world to me. If con-ed wanted to do this, they could just as easily have sent out a pre-recorded voice message through the phone. One of the women tried to barge into my home taking one step in, THEN asking if she could come in. Of course I didn’t allow her in.
I excused myself, told them to wait outside, closed and locked the door and left them outside waiting until they went away.

  3. This is going on in Bay Ridge as well. A man rang my bell and said that he needed to see my bill and payment information, even though he did not know my name and apparently whether or not I actually had Con Edison, since he said ” You do have Con Edison, right?” A little fishy. I made up an excuse that I needed to leave before this could go any further. Please be aware that this is spreading around Brooklyn.
