Pure Essentials Open

Pure Essentials, the new pharmacy and drug store on Seventh Avenue and 2nd Street, where the 2nd Street Cafe used to be, is now open.

They opened on Thursday and OSFO and I went in around 5 p.m.

Frankly, I was surprised. It’s basically a drug store with an emphasis on high end hair products, skin care products, children’s hair and skin products, vitamins, herbals, and supplements. They do seem to have a good selection of products with an emphasis on the natural and organic.

Still, confusion. I thought it was going to be Kids Rx or something like a Back to the Land for kid’s health products.

It’s really a drug store with a lot of expensive health products, as well as kitchen items, stationery, cards, candles, etc.

No surprise, we managed to spend upwards of $30 on mouthwash, a new toothbrush for OSFO, Ricola cough drops, hair curlers for OSFO, hair scuncis, clips and more.

So it’s a bit of a mix. Could be a good thing to have nearby. And it’s not a national chain. Woo hoo.

Walking by this afternoon, I see there’s a mention of Kid Rx on one of the windows and a separate entrance. I am wondering if this is a coming attraction. Anyone know?

  1. I had such a good experience with Bill (the pharmacist) from Kids RX, I felt compelled to share. My dog has had cancer for the past few years. She has been on a holistic medication for this past year. It has been working but it is very costly. A friend suggested that I try Kids RX because they specialize in pet medication as well, so I did. Bill could not have been any nicer or more caring. He went above and beyond his call of duty. Not only did he research and track down the medication, he got it for me for a fraction of the price I was paying. He also offered to deliver it to Brooklyn Heights free of charge. I also have to mention that while I was in the store, I picked up some of my hair products for a much better price than what I usually pay(They carry a great selection too) Over all I had a very pleasant experience with Pure Essentials and Kids RX. They are truly a welcome addition to the neighborhood. It is really nice to have an old fashioned pharmacy in the area with a caring and meaningful approach to their customers as opposed to all the chain stores.

A friend of mine recomended that I try Kids RX, because they specialize in pet medications as well. Bill was so helpful and caring and was able to get me the medication signifigantly cheaper. He was so caring and helpful. He even offered to deliver it to Brooklyn Heights free of charge. It reminded me of when I was I child and we had a local pharmacist that knew you by name and not like how it is now with all the chain pharmacies. While I was there I picked up some of the hair products that I use for a much better price than I usually pay. Over all Pure Essentials and Kids RX are a great addition to the neighborhood. I welcome them.

  3. The KidsRX part of the shop is now open, and you owe it to yourself to go talk to the owner/pharmacist/chief guy about what he does. He is PASSIONATE about delivering great medicinal care to those who often like their medicine least — kids. He will change the flavor of cold medicine for you, but more importantly (in my view), he can mix up compounds of some of the bitterest medications to make them sippable and tolerable, at no extra cost. This would be especially welcome, I think, to those parents, like me, whose children need to take one or more medications every day but who can’t or won’t swallow pills. Even the liquid versions, when they are available, still taste terrible, and when liquid isn’t available, stirring crushed tablets or the powdered contents of capsules into orange juice is usually only moderately successful. The idea of achieving both medication compliance and a happy home sometimes seems like a distant dream. Anyway, I think you’d enjoy talking with him.
