I walked by one of the two storefronts pictured on Brownstoner today and wondered, yes I wondered, what’s going in there. Alas, there was no one to ask.
And wouldn’t you know it, Brownstoner Knows.
The owners of the 7th Avenue’s Sotto Voce are bringing versions of their popular Italian formula to two new locations on 5th Avenue. Within the next month they’re going to open a bistro called Aperitivo
on the corner of 1st street (shown above left). One of Sotto’s managers
says Aperitivo is going to be open from early morning to late at night
and have classic bistro trappings like a marble bar…
DOUBLE THREAT ON FIFTH. ALAS
The looming presence of Sotto Voce’s
Two new Italian eateries,
Has prompted venerable Aunt Suzy’s
To open a bar that’s sure to please.
If not the oldtime customers
And not the ones it well may lose,
The drinks can bring forgetfulness
To waiters with nothing to do but shmooze.
I know there are many people who love this restaurant but I have eaten there just afew times and times enough to know the food is almost passable but nothing to leave the house to pursue. Given that point of view I can’t stand up and cheer for 2 new places by same owner that is more than likely to proliferrate mediocre fare. But..I am sure I will at least give it a try before writing it off the list. It is refreshing in PS for any business to be doing well enough to consider an expansion rather than the recent trend of sotes closing.
Get ready for the homogenization of Park Slope dining.
As more adventurous restaurants try and fail, will Fifth Ave. be one long pasta joint, interrupted only by Blue Ribbon, Al di La and Stone Park? Sad prospects for most of us.
