THE F-TRAIN IS INDEED RUNNING: 11:25 AM!
"The F-train is indeed running," Hepcat, who called at 11:21 a.m. on Wednesday, told me. He called from the train as it made its way on the outdoor elevated tracks from the Fourth Avenue station to the Smith and Ninth Street station.
"It’s very crowded," he said.

HEPCAT IS WALKING TO THE F: WILL THERE BE A TRAIN?
Hepcat is on his way to the F: He has a meeting in SoHo. Will there be a train? He says that he will call when he gets there to inform OTBKB readers. Will he call?
My upstair’s neighbor is saying that the best bet is the D-train. That’s what the MTA site said (it was updated at around 10 a.m.).
DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THE F TRAIN IS RUNNING?
It’s 11 a.m. and Diaper Diva has to get to work and is trying to figure out what to do. Please advise.
LARGE PIECE OF BUILDING FALLS DOWN ON FIFTH AVENUE IN PARK SLOPE
An OTBKB reader wrote in with this news. She took these pictures with her cell phone.
Hi, I was standing outside Stone Park and suddenly heard what I thought was a car crash. I ran over to see what it was and the whole top of a building had falling on the sidewalk. Luckily nobody was hurt.
My cell phone was in the restaurant and i ran to get it. Someone else had a cell phone, but he was just taking pictures.
I called 911 and in about 5 minutes tons of fire trucks came and closed off at least 3 blocks surrounding the building.
It’s actually the building right next to the building that the ladder is going up to. See that black molding. On the building where the firefighter is?
That’s what fell off the building next to it. Really scary. If someone had the misfortune of walking there at the moment they would have been killed.
WEATHER BY ROSE
Horrible rain. The sun is peeping out now. But it’s supposed to start up later.
Trains not running because of the water. The trains are flooded out. 2,3, not running. No trains running out of Grand Central. The F isn’t running. Sun is peeping out now. But I don’t know…
LAURYN HILL AT WINGATE PARK: WELL WORTH THE WAIT
The Martin Luther King Jr. Concert Series, celebrating its 25th anniversary season with a line-up of gospel, classic soul, contemporary, Caribbean
and R&B artists really had a BIG SHOW on Monday night.
The notorious no-show, Lauryn Hill stunned the crowd of 15,000 at Wingate Park in Brooklyn with her two-hour set, which included many favorties from the Mis-Education of Lauryn Hill and even two Robert Flack songs. An OTBKB reader had this to say.
Forget the fact that she was scheduled at 7:30 and didn’t come on till a
little after 10, which was expected, but she sounded like she smoked a
pack of camel unfiltered and drank a half a fifth. I saw Lauryn in
1997, pre-Miseducation and she was phenomenal; thats what I expected
last night.Don’t get me wrong there were flares of genius (her version
of Nina Simone’s Sinnerman, and Zion), but other than that she was all
over, introducing this kind of Afro Jazz Funk that was reminiscent of Phish or the Grateful Dead.I am still more forgiving then the rest of
the audience who began to leave after the first song. I still love her
for her work on Mis-education and hope she can remain sane enough to
make good music post Rohan [Marley] and being a self-indulgent diva.
But Veteran rock critic, John Parales had a very different impression of the show. He filed this report with the New York Times:
Although
her voice had a hoarse, raspy edge, possibly from the strain of
touring, she did not spare herself. She used the rasp for emphasis like
a classic soul singer or a preacher, as one more way to telegraph
emotion. Often Ms. Hill seized a line of a song as an incantation:
repeating it, rephrasing it, pushing it lower and higher, switching
from ache to defiance or leaping away to scat-sing a barrage of
syllables. She was fervent and insistent, but she also eased off to
croon two ballads associated with Roberta Flack — “Killing Me Softly
With His Song” (her hit with the Fugees) and “The First Time Ever I Saw
Your Face” — and a Shirelles-style version of “Will You Still Love Me
Tomorrow?”In many of the songs Ms. Hill inserted lines, sung and
declaimed, about refusing to compromise. She has spoken in interviews
about her distaste for the music business and its marketing niches. But
she is a hugely gifted musician with larger social ideals, and the kind
of performance she gave on Monday night needed no compromises at all.
GREENEST BLOCK AWARDED BY BROOKLYN BOTANIC GARDEN
For a listing of all the winners and for more information on how to enter next year’s contest, go to www.bbg.or
Residents working together to make a greener Brooklyn were rewarded for
their efforts at the 13th Annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest
Tuesday.Sponsored by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, organizers say the
contest not only builds greener streets, but stronger communities, as
well."It’s really the block that does it," said Scot Medbury of the
Brooklyn Botanic Garden. "And your neighbor that you don’t know, maybe,
comes and rings your doorbell and gets you to plant something, and then
everybody starts to build community around such a positive thing as
plants and beautification."This year, judges emphasized tree bed gardening.
In a contest with over 230 participants, winning is no small feat.
"We bad! It feels really good," said First Place Block resident Dave smith. "I like getting the reward for all the work."
TRANSIT OFFICIALS URGE COMMUNTERS TO STAY HOME
This from New York 1 as of 10:40 am:
Transit officials urged New Yorkers to delay their morning commute
after severe weather flooded numerous subway stations and roads
throughout the area, leading to massive mass transit delays during the
morning rush.NYC Transit spokesman Paul Fleuranges says the subway system could
not handle the morning rush, and that he guesses it will take at least
until noon or later to get all of the system back up and running
normally."No subway line right now that is running at full normal of its
route, so if people are at home, they’re about to leave their house,
advice to you is don’t,” said Fleuranges. “If you can delay your
commute, if you can go in a little later, do so cause right now we
probably can’t handle you and we probably can’t get you from point A to
point B."As of 10 a.m. there was no service at all on the L, 3, V, W, and G
trains. Also in Brooklyn little or no service on the 2, the F, the B/Q,
or the N, which was not running Manhattan-bound between Coney Island
and 36th Strett. In Queens, there was no E train service.
Also in Manhattan, there was no 1 train below 14th Street, and no trains in Manhattan on the 4/5/6 line.
As of 10 a.m., limited service had been restored on the Port
Washington Branch on one of the two tracks with residual delays of 30
minutes. Earlier, service was suspended due to flooding conditions at
Bayside. The railroad also said it was experiencing 25 to 30 minute
delays systemwide as a result weather related flooding in several
locations.Just before 9 a.m., MetroNorth reported that all service –
northbound and southbound – has been restored on the Hudson, Harlem and
New Haven Lines through the Mott Haven area. All service is operating
through the area slowly and customers will be significantly delayed.Reports of storm damage are coming in from all around the boroughs.
A heavy storm with tornado-like winds ripped the roofs off several
houses in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, damaging several houses
and downing a number of trees.
Flatbush residents also reported damaged houses and crushed cars along several blocks.
Power outages were also reported on Staten Island as a result of flooding.
The storms prompted the National Weather Service to issue a tornado
warning for Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens shortly before 6:30 a.m.
The warning expired at 7:15 a.m
BAY RIDGE PARALYZED BY STORM: A TORNADO?
Read all about it on the Bay Ridge Rover. See loads of great photos, too. Here’s an excerpt.
Residents were shaken from their slumber early Wednesday morning by
powerful fast-moving thunder storms, producing 1-3 inches of rain in
less than 2 hours, sparking tornado warnings for Staten Island and
Brooklyn – and paralyzing Bay Ridge.
In northern Bay Ridge,
Colonial Rd and 3rd avenue were particularly devastated – littered with
massive downed tress that knocked out power, making streets impassable
and snarling traffic all over Bay Ridge.
Power outages and
flooding caused subway service all over the city to be indefinitely
suspended sending commuters above ground in droves, turning every major
traffic artery out of Bay Ridge into a choke point.
No reports yet as to injuries or death. Property damage was abundant.

MISS HEATHER CUT OFF BY BRIAN LEHRER
Miss Heather called into the Brian Lehrer show while Bed-Stuy Blog, BushwickBK, and I were being interviewed for a segment on Brooklyn bloggers. She was cut off because there wasn’t time for her to finish her thoughts. Tune in to New York Shitty for what she was going to say.
She mentions that Gowanus Lounge was curiously missing. He was invited but was unable to attend.
HEPCAT’S OCEAN PICTURES
Let’s take a moment to admire Hepcat’s ocean pictures. Here’s what he did: he wrapped his Sony camera in a Ziplock bag and ran through the waves.
From a distance, I thought he was videotaping the waves. But he didn’t want the waves to crash over the camera.
Hepcat loves the late afternoon light at Amagansett Beach. “Around 6 p.m. the sun comes down below any clouds there might be and you get this glowing light that’s very directional but also diffuse.”
Great pix, Hepcat. OTBKB will be running ocean and/or East End shots all week.
A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC AT ISSUE PROJECT ROOM
And the best part: it’s right on Third Street and Third Avenue.
Jenny Lin
is one of the most respected young pianists today, admired for her
adventurous programming and charismatic stage presence. The New York
Times writes: "No one who has heard [her] will need to be told that Ms.
Lin has a gift for melodic flow" and "remarkable technical command,"
and Gramophone magazine has hailed her as "an exceptionally sensitive
pianist." Her performances have taken her to venues such as Carnegie
Recital Hall, Kennedy Center, Miller Theatre, MoMA, the Whitney Museum,
and MCA Chicago, as well as Chopin, BAM’s Next Wave, Archipel,
Flanders, Divonne, and Ars Musica Festivals, with groups such as
Ensemble Contrechamps, Elliott Sharp’s Orchestra Carbon, the SWR German
Radio Orchestra, and Orchestra Sinfonica Nationale della RAI. She is
also featured in the new documentary, “Zahara”, by Elemental Films
Spain, and records for Hänssler Classic, BIS, Koch, and Aeon.
has been freelancing as a violinist/violist in New York City since he
finished his graduate studies in violin performance at Queens College.
Interested in a variety of styles, Chern-Hwei is also active in jazz,
rock, and hip-hop performance. His band, Project Taming Sari, was
formed earlier this year, playing his own compositions. He debuted at
Carnegie Hall last year and was recently part of Vision Festival’s
Memorial Tribute to Leroy Jenkins. He will appear this summer at
Lincoln Center Out of Doors and at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Art
Center performing a series of concerts as well as conducting violin and
improvisation workshops. Chern-Hwei has worked with musicians and
ensembles such as hip-hop artists Akim Funk Buddha and Pete List, the
Bach Vespers at the Holy Trinity Church, cellist Marcy Rosen, composers
Paul Chihara, Mikael Karlsson and Zhou Tian, and rock group This
Ambitious Orchestra, among others.
ROSE’S WEATHER REPORT
Smartmom’s friend Rose calls every morning. She is always up to the minute on the weather because she watches the local news.
Today, Rose says it’s going to be very, very hot and humid. She’s going to stay in her air conditioned apartment.
PERFORMANCE ART WITH SUBMARINES
New York 1 reports that the submarine was part of a an elaborate art project and not a stunt. Hey, what’s the difference?
SHOCKED
New York Magazine has gone too far. In this week’s issue, they actually published the address of Jonathan Safran Foer and Nicole Kraus’ house in Park Slope, as part of an article about New York Tribes and where they hang out. This location, the only personal residence mentioned in the piece, was listed in the "The Lit Guy" section. This section also included:
826 NYC (a.k.a. the Superhero Supply Co.)
372 Fifth Ave.
The storefront that houses the East Coast branch of Dave Eggers’s do-gooder tutoring outfit still offers McSweeney’s products and twee items (capes, utility belts) that’ll leave you pleased or irritated.

SUNSET PARK’S JOHNNY’S PIZZA FIGHTS PAPA JOHN
The New York Times’ reports that a Papa John’s pizza franchise is moving in next door to Johnny’s Pizza, a fixture in Sunset Park for decades. The owner is especially upset because the original papa Johnny died a month ago.
Of all the spots the franchise could have chosen, why, he asks, did it have to be on the other side of the wall where two centurion busts stand guard above customers waiting for zeppoles or Sicilian slices?

CHARLES J. HYNES
Triple Homicide
The debut novel from longtime Brooklyn district attorney Charles "Joe"
Hynes, Triple Homicide is the gritty saga of two generations of New
York City police officers fighting to stay on the right side of the
law.
In the early 1990s in New York, easy money stands to be made at every
turn, and temptation proves a bitter struggle for the young and
much-decorated NYPD Sergeant Steven Holt—and for Steven and his
uncle Robert, an officer before him, an increasingly violent mess
endangers their careers and the reputation of the entire department.
Born out of real stories of corruption and centered around two men who
ultimately dare to challenge the fabled "blue wall" of silence, the
novel works toward a majestic courtroom on Long Island, where Sergeant
Holt is about to stand trial for triple homicide and where, as he
comes to know his past, he’ll learn that nothing he’s known has ever
been as it seemed.

CRIME UP IN PROSPECT AND OTHER CITY PARKS
Crime in city parks is on the rise, according to figured released by the NYPD Sunday.
The department looked at figures in 20 parks and found 68 crimes
reported during the second quarter of the year. That’s compared to 48
last year.Thirty of the crimes were grand larcenies, or property that was
taken when left unattended. There were no murders in the parks during
that period, police say.Flushing Meadows Park had the highest number of crimes, 21, followed by Prospect and Bronx Parks.
Crime citywide is down seven percent compared to 2006.
