  1. Just want to say that I love your daily pictures. There are many evocative images among them that speak to me of memories I carry in my heart, others that open new visions.
Due to the holidays I wasn’t here for some time and I truly enjoyed browsing all those photographs I had missed out on.
With the best wishes for the new year,
    Merisi

  2. thanks for the detailed reply hc. it must be something that happens then when they are uploaded to this blog, because they all look very low-res here (not just the sugar shot, but all of them). the pics on your site look much crisper.

  3. This photo was taken with a Canon 1Ds in raw mode. Lens was a Pentax 50mm F/1.4 at a distance of about 14 inches. That gives me a depth of field of 0.15 inches. The plane of focus runs through the top of the white Domino sugar pack and the bottom front edge of the salt shaker.
The Pentax 50mm F/1.4 is a very sharp “Double Gause” design with quite a bit of curvature of field close up and a nice very slightly under corrected spherical aberration. This gives a nice out of focus image behind the plane of focus with very smooth highlights wide open.
I tend to do a lot of very shallow DOF work and I’m also fond of very low light so sometimes there are .25 – 1 second hand held photos here. Overall sharpness is not that important in a lot of my work, and in other pictures it is a big deal
Many of the photos in OTBKB are intended to be printed at about 12×18 to 16×24 inches and compressing a 4064 x 2704 image down to a 800×532 30k or so jpeg ( so the page doesn’t take all day to load ) tends to wipe out the detail. A lot of my photography is all about surfaces, but that generally is not what I post here.
Here is something from the same camera

which seems reasonably sharp to me

  4. looks fuzzy to me even when i click to open – i do a lot of photography myself and am sensitive to this. guess the resolution just isn’t so high. that or he’s using a point-and-shoot as opposed to SLR.

  5. These shots are not fuzzy. Are you talking about all the No Words_Daily Pix. And you can see a full high res versions when you click. I am curious what Hugh Crawford has to say on this… From OTBKB.

  6. why are these pics always so fuzzy? are you using a cheap-o point-n-shoot cam or are you just lowering the resolution before posting? the quality is really sacrificed. would be nice to see the full high-res versions when you click on these.
