Gowanus Lounge has the picture: Ikea began building on its construction site on the Brooklyn waterfront last week. In GL’s pix you can see the beginnings of the big blue-and-yellow box that the Swedish multinational is known for.

I am sorry that Ikea chose to put its big box blue and yellow building up instead of trying to blend better into the neighborhood.
But I am certainly glad it is coming to Brooklyn.
There is a fine line between “preservationists” and NIMBY types. What many conviently forget is that by now most everything in the city has been built on somebody else relocation. Why they feel happily able to use these past changes but forbid changes to THEIR turf seems self-serving.
I think that if instead of theeffort to block Ikea the effort had been to getting Ikea’s building to blend into the community better it might have toned down the “big-box” feeling
