The Brooklyn Arts Council announces a reading of poems about September 11th written by local poets to be held on Thursday, September 9, 2010 from 7 – 8:30pm at P.S. Bookshop in Dumbo, Brooklyn (76 Front St.).
From a poem written by a downtown office worker that eloquently captures the sorrow felt by New Yorkers silently marching home on foot on that fateful day, to a poem written by a firefighter’s wife inspired by her Husband’s heroics, and another illustrating the madness for war that reached a fever pitch shortly after the Towers came down, the selection of poems illustrates the diversity of people affected by the events of 9/11 and the variety of emotional responses Americans have continued to experience since that day.
September 11th Memorial Poetry Project is presented as part of BAC Folk Arts’ annual 9/11 memorial project. Every year since 2005, BAC Folk Arts has presented an annual September 11th memorial project. Past projects include film screenings, symposia and photo exhibitions all demonstrating the way New York artists, and especially Brooklyn artists, respond to and memorialize September 11. All submitted poems will be kept in BAC’s Folk Arts Archive for future generations to read and enjoy.
The invitation to submit a poem was open to writers anywhere. However, primary consideration for the performance on September 11th was given to Brooklyn artists, then to others in the New York Metro area, and beyond.
Transcripts of poems and interviews with participating poets and the Project Director Kay Turner are available upon request.
