No Sound at Sheep Station, No Mad Men on Block but Great Reggae

Sunday I was at Captain Nicks Rock and Roll Bar on Block Island listening to a reggae band from Boston called Ila Mawana. I didn’t even bother trying to find a place to watch Mad Men. As far I can tell there were no public viewings of Mad Men on Block Island. Ila Mawana is a great band with a lead singer named Gianpalo Blower (I’m guessing a made up name), a terrific female sax player name Nancy Loedy and a cheerful trumpet player named Trevor Bernatchez. They really rocked the place though there weren’t very many people in the club and very few dancing to an exceedingly danceable band. Meanwhile in Brooklyn…

Hepcat went to Sheep Station and tried to watch Mad Men there. Unfortunately they were having trouble with the sound. Hepcat tried to read Don Draper’s lips but to no avail. He didn’t have a clue about what was going on. Hopefully, they’ll have the sound problem figured out by next Sunday.

Luckily my sister called me Monday, while I was waiting for take-out quesadillas and Buffalo Wings at National Hotel, and gave me a blow-by-blow account of the second episode. I must say, it’s fun to hear it from her and I have a really clear sense of what’s going on. She adds her own commentary and references so it’s a lot of fun…

  1. As for Mad Men in the Slope, just heard from one of the owners of Sheep Station that they got the sound all fixed so they’ll be ready for tonight’s viewing. Supposedly the projection screen in the back room’s fixed up, too, so there will be more places to sit this week. Phew!

  2. First of all, the name is spelled Gianpaolo. It’s an italian name – combination of Gianni (short for Giovanni) and Paolo. Why would you assume it was made up?
