Toby Williams, a Park Slope, mom, music therapist and jazz singer, recently discovered a dead raccoon in her kitchen. A few nights ago, she thought her apartment was being robbed but it turned out that a raccoon snuck in, scurried about her kitchen in search of food and died in one of her cabinet drawers…
NBC News reports that it was a tear in the window screen that allowed the lone raccoon to enter Toby’s apartment. Said raccoon may have been trying to find food for its baby because Toby saw a little baby raccoon on the fire escape.
Truth is, raccoons are running wild in Park Slope. And they’re big — some the size of dogs. The Department of Animal Control recommends that you don’t leave food outside, even for your pet. And if you see a raccoon in your house: house, don’t touch it, rather call the Department of Environmental Conservation — then wait for the inevitable news crew.
To me the bigger issue here is the baby raccoon, no? (compassion for other species, not just HUMAN ‘smart moms?’) baby raccoons need their moms. The mom was trying to get food for the baby and the baby was waiting outside. It’s so sweet but tragic.
I’m wondering did Toby contact a wildlife rehabilitator for advice ? If not, she should.
There’s a lot of fear about raccoons right now that is mostly overblown. Let’s not forget we share this earth with other species…
