The first major surprise was for me the most disappointing. Haneke’s White Ribbon is a masterful work. Maybe Haneke can guest on 30 Rock someday.

The White Ribbon was a masterful con job. You were conned, as were many many others, into thinking it was a good film. I’m waiting for the day that Haneke admits that his entire career has been a cruel joke on credulous film audiences. Maybe Bernard Henry-Levy will cite him as the greatest director of all time, at which point Haneke will admit that he’s sucked this whole time, intentionally. “My films have been empty shells, signifying nothing. I simply can not believe I’ve pulled it off for this long.” You know, like the scene in Annie Hall.
