25 Park Slope Restaurants Cited/Fined for Labor Violations

Many favorite Park Slope restaurants are on the list released by the State Department of Labor Department yesterday. 25
Brooklyn restaurants owe at least $910,000 in unpaid wages to more than
200 workers.

In Park Slope, state
inspectors found that workers make as little as $2.75 an hour way below state
minimum wage of $7.25. They found that delivery workers earn $210 to $275 a week for 60 to 70 hours of work.

Of the 25 restaurants cited, 12 restaurants paid back the wages while 13 other restaurants are still
in negotiations to pay back the wages.

  1. Restaurant workers are self-employed free-lancers and salaried white collar managers. They’re *professionals* and ineligible for minimum wage, for overtime, for workers’ comp. As a professional, no one tells Hector how to bus dirty dishes, so long as he produces his work ahead of his client’s deadlines. And that’s exactly the way it should be, goddamnit. The gubbermint is enslaving these business owners with onerous and unfair burdens.
What’s that you say? I’m full of feces? Well, yes, by golly, I am: I’m describing the common rationalizing of more than a few small business owners.

  3. Upscale neighborhood, narcissistic stroller set, fascist food coop… paying cooley wages to those who serve them? There is always an underlying consistency to the way people behave in the long run, and revelations like this always reflect the overall collective consciousness of the area. Just connect the dots, folks. That’s all you ever have to do.

  4. Is there a full list of restaurants that had the violations? There’s a Daily News article that mentions a few other names (http://tinyurl.com/yb7szay) that aren’t on the list above – I assume that means they paid the back wages immediately?
    How disappointing!

  5. Something’s missing!
Here’s the other half of the list, those that were cited and paid all or some:
The following restaurants have made full or partial payments:
    Baluchi’s
    Mezcali’s Mexican (three locations)
    Miriam Restaurant
    Mr. Wonton
    Nana Restaurant
    Red Hot Szechuan
    Slim Lamb “Miracle Grill”
    Sotto Voce
    Sweet Melissa Park Slope
