Helen Levitt was born in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn in 1913 and grew up to be one of the great street photographers of the 20th century. She was known for her lyrical and effusive photographs of children on the streets of Manhattan in the 1930's and 40's.  Today's obituary in the Times tells her story.
