THE DRAM SHOP: NEW NABE BAR ON 9TH STREET

The Yelpers are yelping about it. I stopped in for a look yesterday and it looked like a fun bar with good-sounding food (I read the menu).

The Dram Shop is located on 9th Street between 5th and 6th Avenue (is it the old pet shop?) They’ve got loads of beers on tap, burgers, board games, and shuffle board?

Dram shop is a legal term referring to a bar or a place where beverages are sold. According to Wikipedia, “traditionally it referred to a shop where spirits were sold by the dram, a small unit of liquid.”

I was wondering.

I got a good vibe about the place, which has a dark, comfortable, nicely designed bar and restaurant seating in the back.

I’m guessing that the food is good because the bartender was talking it up…

If anyone has been there let me know.

  1. I live in California and can’t get to the Dram Shop Bar right now, but I would LOVE the recipe for the mac and cheese deep-fried lumps, and the spicy ketsup! I tore the picture of them out the the Oct 20 issue of NEW YORK, and can’t stop looking at it. What kind of cheese? What kind of breadcrumbs, and how are they formed? What kind of deep-fry oil? Thanks!!

  2. What, the South Slope doesn’t deserve food? I’m glad to see Union Market in what was a vacant storefront for the past 10 years….maybe you’re longing for that Italian-smorgasbord place that was there for 2 months.

  3. I have nothing against fish.. but geez the previous business was long over-due in its demise. I haven’t been in to this bar but have heard good things about it on other sites. The night we considered going in for a Burgur we had our 2 year old grandson with us and though I was in to it husband said…”It is a bar!! I am not taking a 2 year old in to a Bar.”
How old fashionedd considering the uproar about Union Hall.
Oh well.. Dram is on the list to try.

  4. I have to admit feeling a bit prejudiced against it (a) because I miss the pet store and (b) ’cause it’s one more example of “out with yet another oldtime Park Slope institution” and “in with yet another new hip [fill in the blank]”….
Is this an unfair knee-jerk reaction? I don’t know. Sigh. I’m also extremely prejudiced against the new Union Market which just does not seem to fit in the south slope.
