PROBLEM WITH PET STORES SELLING PUPPIES

I got this email from Hillary, my favorite blue haired cashier at Shawn’s Liquors. She is one of the Park Slope 100 and a passionate lover of animals.

I’m sending out a mass email to everyone I know who has pets or
doesn’t but loves animals. A new pet store at 255 Flatbush right before
6th Ave (where Yaba used to be) has just opened.

Most people know that
pet stores get their puppies from puppy mills or backyard breeders.
These dogs are kept in deplorable conditions, no genetic testing is
done to ensure healthy puppies which leads to sick puppies. It came to
the attention of some members of Brooklynian.com,
after much debate one member went in to speak to the owner.

She
approached the owner very politely and was treated terribly. The owner
told her he didn’t care where the puppies came from and she didn’t look
like she could afford to buy a dog anyway.

He also told her he already
called the police about the "harassment" of people discussing his store
on a public forum. There is much more information on the Brooklynian
website, I’ll put the link below. I’m hoping to get the word out to as
many people as possible about this store. Ethical breeders do not sell
their puppies to pet stores.
I’ll include a few links that I posted on
the thread so everyone can see why I (and many others) have a problem
with a pet store selling puppies. Thanks for reading, you guys are all
great!

Take care,

Hillary
(Blue/purple haired cashier)

P.S. Hope no one thinks I’ve crossed the line by emailing, but I
think you all know how crazy I am about animals. Sorry if it’s not cool!

  1. NO breeders and NO pet stores!!!
Pet stores use puppy mills and are inhumane. Many breeders are only in it for profit and abuse, puppy mill or over breed their animals.

  2. I have puggle puppies for sale. I am not a pet store my dogs had puppies and i dont know where to sell them. If anyone is interested call me at 347-394-6070

  3. I absolutely support boycotting this pet store, but how about boycotting Nike until they just “DO IT” and take a stand and drop Michael Vick? I for one, will never buy another thing with the Nike name on it.

  4. if you haven’t already, take a gander over at brooklynian.com. it’s getting heated, since the store’s owner seems to be posting… posing as an anonymous person who likes pet stores.
i believe the local rescue org. may be having an event saturday right in front of this store on flatbush. send everyone you know over there!

  5. You’re the best for posting this! I’m so used to people thinking I’m some nut for caring so much about animals that I forget there are other people out there that care too. I can’t take any credit for anything but writing the email. The wonderful people over at Brooklynian and the member who approached the owner of the store are the ones who deserve it. If we can let people know where pet stores get their kittens and puppies maybe they’ll think twice before buying a pet from one of them. These places are only making money because people keep buying from them. If you’re looking for a pet go to a shelter or a rescue group, there are purebred rescues too. If you really want to buy a purebred, do some research and find a reputable breeder.
Denise, I couldn’t have said it better myself.
And I didn’t know I had a fan club, are you the only member? (Insert wink thingy here)

  6. The best place for anyone to get a dog is always at an animal shelter. If you get a one or two year old dog, it still has plenty of youth ahead of it and is easily trainable, and importantly, you know how big it will get!
Everyone I have ever known who has bought a puppy from a pet store has given it up within a year.
Also, for anyone who is insistent that they only want a puppy or a kitten, remember this: you are still going to end up with a dog or a cat after a few short months!
