Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other lawmakers were on hand for the ground
breaking ceremony for a new 400,000 square foot, seven building
expansion at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.City officials say the project will create 800 new jobs, add a huge
supermarket to the neighborhoo, and create business opportunities for
local minority and women contractors.Borough President Marty Markowitz says the Navy Yard project is not
only environmentally-friendly, but also an economic boom for Brooklyn."I’m proud to join my colleagues to celebrate this expansion, which
shows that New York City and Brooklyn can still make it big, make it
bold, and even make it green," said Markowitz. "Let’s face it: The more
things say ‘Made in Brooklyn,’ the more Brooklyn’s got it made."Three of the new industrial buildings will replace a large,
deteriorating structure. First up, will be an 89,000 square foot
industrial building on Perry Avenue. Most of the new businesses will focus on the fast-growing food manufacturing and processing sector.
